Safe Blogging for Students

Tips for Students (Grade 5)

SMART RULES
S SAFE: Keep safe by being careful not to
give out personal information – such as your
full name, email address, phone number,
home address, photos or school name – to
people you are chatting with online.
M MEETING: Meeting someone you
have only been in touch with online can be
dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or
carers’ permission and even then only when
they can be present.
A ACCEPTING: Accepting emails, IM
messages, or opening files, pictures or texts
from people you don’t know or trust can lead
to problems – they may contain viruses or
nasty messages!
R RELIABLE: Information you find on the
internet may not be true, or someone online
may be lying about who they are.
T TELL: Tell your parent, carer or a trusted
adult if someone or something makes you
feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or
someone you know is being bullied online.
To find out why these rules are important see

3 Ways I could use blogs in Class

1.) ACTIVITY 1(Grade 5 English Speaking Students for all)

S.S STANDARD-

Geography

use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we live—local, national, and global—including the distribution of people, places, and environments over the Earth’s surface.
---> BLOGS are a great way for teachers to incorporate learning activities into their classroom for independent use on the computers.  I made a blog that offers students that very essence and I will share that link with you here...

ACTIVITY 2.)
http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/ela/elastandards/elamap.html

Standard 1

Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas, discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.
---> BLOGS are a perfect way to allow students an opportunity to be creative with their writing.  An excellent platform for a journal or a creative story that they can add to as they increase their abilities and vocabulary.

ACTIVITY 3

STANDARD-MATH
Students will build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving.
5.PS.1 Know the difference between relevant and irrelevant information when solving problems
5.PS.2 Understand that some ways of representing a problem are more efficient than others
5.PS.3 Interpret information correctly, identify the problem, and generate possible strategies and solutions
--->BLOGS are an excellent way to incorporate a fun place for students to visit and solve word problems by posting comments about questions on a blog or even developing their own tests or questions through posts.
